Dr. Manson is a great surgeon. Although, it's only been 6 weeks and I still have away to go, the swelling is gone, I am driving, walking up and down steps, bending my knee with ease. Dr. Manson is caring and patiently listens to your concerns. He calls before and after surgery to make sure you are doing ok. At your 6 week follow up he see you himself and doesn't rely on an assistant. The waiting time was minimal. He also has a wonderful staff which in my opinion reflects on him as well. My surgical outcome was fantastic and during my follow-up appointment with Dr. Manson he was similarly thorough, as well as patient with all my questions. There is a reason why he books so far out! He is very popular with patients, no doubt because of his high level of experience and talent but also for his fantastic bedside manner.On another note, my experience with St. Joe's hospital was also amazing. The hospital is extremely clean and pleasant, with an all-around caring and professional staff (general nurses, anesthesiologist, surgical nurses). Unlike other surgeries I have had, I was given ample time to fully recover before I was discharged. I received a left total hip replacement from Dr Manson. After finding out I had AVN in it at only 22 y/o, I spoke with multiple surgeons for different opinions on it. Dr Manson was the only surgeon I felt comfortable with at the initial appointment. I knew immediately I wanted him to perform it based off of his knowledge and confidence he had with my situation. He made sure during the surgery to test the tissue in my hip to make sure no infection/diseases were present. My surgery took an hour (I’m not kidding) and I was home by early afternoon the same day. I can walk without assistive devices and have more flexion than I did prior to surgery. Choosing a hip surgeon is a difficult decision. There's a lot of good Drs. who have different surgical philosophies, a wide variety of procedures, and even some who have robotic assistance. Successful hip replacement requires a surgeon with hands of gold and knowledge and even carpentry skills. Beyond his medical skills he has to saw, drill, and measure.IA little background. I'm a 68 year old male, very active, in decent shape. About 5 years ago my left hip started bothering me but I didn't have the classic symptoms that point to hip replacement. My pain was on the outside of the hip only. It got to the point where my day to day activities were impacted. I saw 3 hip Drs.over the next 4 years but still was unsure of my next move.Then a buddy recommended seeing Dr. Manson. Of course I googled him, saw some videos he had online, then went to see him. I went to his Bel Air office. He looked at my xrays, examined me, and told me both hips were shot, and explained a course of action. Dr. Manson has a bedside manor that exudes compassion, confidence, optimism. After he explained his technique and plan of attack I was all in. In March of 2021 he replaced my left hip. 9 months later he did the right one.I purposely waited to write this review to see some long range results. I now can do things I haven't been able to for the last few years with no pain. Important things like put on socks, get in and out of a car, or bend down to pick something up.I walk 3 miles a day and have no other restrictions. I don't even think about my hips nowadays.I can't claim that he is the best.....he's the only one that's replaced my hips...but I can't imagine being in better hands. Phenomenal gentleman! I've been too many specialists and many come off quite frankly, arrogant. Not so with Dr. Manson. While he is very knowledgeable, he showed humility and kindness towards me. Immediately after my appointment I called my mom and recommended Dr. Manson for her knee.8/22/22 Surgery completed and now 6 weeks post-op I saw Dr. Manson today, as usual, he was a gentleman showing genuine interest in all I had to say about my recovery. Well....If you're in the market for a New Hip or New Knee, Dr. Manson @ The University of Maryland Medical Center in Downtown Baltimore can help you out & have you back WALKING again!!I personally did not get any Formal Introduction with Dr. Manson & didn't even know he existed until the Tragic Week of Thanksgiving 2013.Sure, I had finally came home from my Successful Open-Heart Surgery @ UMMC & my Rehab @ Genesis Nursing Home and I got right back into work on my Music Video Project....Bad Decision. I was only home for 7 days when I was eating in the Dining Room & felt the urge to use the bathroom (Number 2 cause I'm a Dialysis Patient).With the Layout of my 40 year old Townhouse the Bathroom is either Upstairs on the 2nd Floor or Downstairs in the Basement...and I'm in the middle on the 1st Floor.So I CAREFULLY went down the stairs to the Basement BUT when I got to the bottom that "Urge" kicked in & it felt like Diarrhea so I tried to "make a Break for it" & that's EXACTLY WHAT I DID...TRIPPED...FELL & "BROKE" MY HIP!!!I called 911. They sent me to Shady "Grave" Hospital. They transferred me to Georgetown. I came there @ the WRONG TIME when the Students (Residents & Interns) had control of things. Brought me in for the Emergency Hip Replacement Surgery & I end up having 2 CARDIAC ARRESTS!!!They then put me in the ICU for a couple days & when the Students wanted to "try it again" my mom told me we'd better get out of here so I wrote on a piece of paper TRANSFER ME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND MEDICAL CENTER because they knew me better. So, they sent me by MedStar Helicopter to the Roof of UMMC.This is where I got my 1st glimpse of Dr. Manson.....and YES, he was SMILING:)All in All, it took 2 Surgeries to get me the Total Hip Replacement that I needed.Why 2? Because when he going to put it in the 1st time I was Bleeding SO MUCH on the Operating Table that he had to abort mission & give me a Temporary Fix...a Hemiarthroplasty (In Layman's Terms: Half of a Hip)....just to as he Poetically said "to get you OUT OF THE WOODS". And I thought I was in Downtown in Baltimore City!!Well, I did finally get "Out of the Woods" on April 18th, 2016!I HIGHLY RECOMMEND DR. Dr. Manson replaced my hip at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center after I had a traumatic fall off the side of steps onto concrete. He performed an Anterior hip replacement and he had me walking within 2 days, performing most activities within 2 weeks and hiking in the Himalayas within 6 months. 55 year old female, fallen off ladder 3 years prior, experienced severe pain. Sought treatment from other ortho's who ordered pills and steroid shots. Each spent about 10 minutes at each visit. The first visit with Dr. Manson, was more than 1 hour! Very thorough, ordered more digital X-ray's, reviewed them, saw severe arthritis in hip and tears in the labrum (no one had mentioned that prior)He ordered physical therapy and set up surgical date. Had surgery on Friday am, Dr. Manson checked on me twice each day for the 4 days I was in U. of MD hospital. Went home on Monday, and began outpatient PT that week. Returned to work in 6 weeks, 3 weeks later, no walker, cane or limp. Very small scar that healed well. Have had two follow-up visits and all is well. The worst part was the TED stockings - hardly any pain from the surgery! I hope I don't have to have the other hip replaced, but if I do, I would not hesitate to see Dr. Manson again.Read more
